Solidarity Dame-Marian, Inc. Scholarships Projects
The foremost aim of Solidarity Dame-Marian is to recognize the importance of education as a basic requirement for self-help and the betterment of the community. To this end, Solidarity Dame-Marian will offer a program of financial sponsorship to a wide range of students residing in Dame-Marie, Haiti. The program will encourage academic excellence while at the same time free the selected students from the financial burdens that accompany education. It is therefore put forth that the following programs be accepted and various sponsors solicited from the public through word of mouth or personal contact.
Public Library...
The education of many students is limited by their access to research materials as well as an appropriate place to read and study. It is recommended that Solidarity Dame-Marian establish a small library for the use of its sponsor students.
This library will be equipped with computers for on-line research as well as a number of resource books covering subjects normally part of the middle and upper school curricula. Sponsors for this program will ensure that money is raised to pay for power, building maintenance, cleaning staff, paper supplies, initial furniture, and a steady supply of reference materials.
Full Scholarship...
Once a child has completed their lower school training Solidarity Dame-Marian is committed to providing academic scholarships to facilitate the best middle and upper school education possible. It is hoped that beginning next year three scholarships per grade will be offered.
As long as these students maintain a high academic standing their scholarship will be continued until the student’s graduation
Elementary School...
Attendance at public school is not a priority for the Haitian government not for many families in Haiti. In addition there is a cost burden for supplies and uniforms. Solidarity Dame-Marian will establish a 100% free public school beginning at Grades A and B (4 and 5 year olds) and extend up through grade 5. It is the intention that the students attending this school will be solicited from the general population of children who currently do not attend school at all. Solidarity will establish a small school with 7 teachers who will follow the public school program and offer encouragement to the students to remain in school. Solidarity will cover all costs for the public education of these 500 students at least.
School Clinic...
Good health and nutrition are vital aspects of education. A clinic will be established to supervise the health and nutrition of the students in the Solidarity program. This clinic will be set up and staffed with a registered nurse as well as a full kitchen staff. The kitchen staff will prepare, under the supervision of the nurse, a nutritious daily lunch for the students attending our school. The nurse, in addition to her preparation of menus, will supervise the basic health needs of the students. She will provide first aid for the school and doctor referrals when necessary.
